‘The studio is a place of improvisation, contemplation and playfulness.’

Working in abstract painting and sculpture, I see the individual paintings and objects as working together, to make one statement of intent. As I move them around from wall to floor to table, new dialogues arise between pieces. I have worked for sometime with paired paintings and these thoughts are now expanding into 3d space. I use simple areas of colour, contrasted with gestural brushstrokes.

The collages and sculptures start with painted paper, canvas, or pieces of wood. Each piece has its own identity and I aim to hold on to that idea. The goal is not to produce a harmonious, balanced composition, though that might happen by accident. Each coloured object is allowed a space of its own in relation to the other pieces. Larger paintings are made by borrowing thoughts, colours and marks from the smaller work in the studio.

Present in the process is the notion of Kairos, the opportune moment. The fragments of possibility in an elastic space of contemplation where ideas jostle and sidle up to one another. I am interested in the inherent mutability of things, that nothing is fixed in appearance or interpretation.
