Staying at High Sands Creek Campsite, Stiffkey at the weekend I found a beach I had not visited, even after a lifetime of visiting North Norfolk. With my love of open space and the horizontal line a current obsession, it’s no surprise that the walk out across Stiffkey marshes to the beach and eventually the sea, was an extraordinary experience.  Only to be done at low tide, the long walk out to the sea is likely to be a solitary experience….we just saw a seal, watching us from the sea, keeping an eye on our westie terrier.  Thoughts on new work – drawings and paintings related to this amazing landscape and the inner contemplative space….

Studio post

Working in the studio on drawings at present, I’ve completed a series of 40 drawings made during the season of Lent.  A drawing made every day to a format that seemed restricting initially but gave rise to many interpretations and variations. Based on a grid of 40 rectangles, working only in graphite and an eraser, the grid is sometimes the whole drawing, at other times it breaks up, and sometimes disappears altogether.  Working with repetition and erasure the process is a means of marking the time – it is a material reminder of my presence in the studio at a particular time – I’m turning up to literally ‘mark time’.  Here are a few of the drawings – I will post more in the following days. Now considering how to show all 40 drawings together, unframed.
